Multi-Disc Screw Press
Compact sludge dewatering machine that thickens and dewaters in one unit, runs unattended around the clock and resists clogging.
Sludge dewatering without a thickener
Adroit’s Multi-Disc Screw Press dewaters sludge from sewage and industrial wastewater treatment plants. Its compact, self-cleaning ring design is intended to reduce clogging and support automatic continuous operation. Because thickening and dewatering take place in the same machine, it can handle low-concentration sludge and may reduce the need for separate sludge thickening equipment, depending on the process design.
The press is enclosed, so there is little odour or splashing, and the area around it stays clean.

Where a screw press fits
Application
Every biological treatment plant produces sludge, and most of it is water. Dewatering it cuts the volume that has to be stored, transported and disposed of. The multi-disc screw press is well suited to the conditions in most Indian STPs and ETPs: variable sludge, limited operator time, limited space and a need to keep power and water bills low.
How the multi-disc screw press works
Operation
The heart of the machine is a filter body made of alternating fixed and moving rings, with a screw running through the middle. The gap between the rings acts as the filter.
Conditioned sludge, mixed with polymer in a flocculation tank, enters the front of the filter body. This is the thickening zone, where the gap between rings is wider and free water drains out quickly by gravity.
The screw moves the sludge towards the dewatering zone at the rear. Here the gap between rings and the pitch of the screw both get smaller, and a back-pressure plate at the outlet builds up internal pressure. The sludge is squeezed continuously and its volume falls, and dewatered cake is discharged at the end.
As the screw turns, it also moves the rings relative to one another. This self-cleaning action helps keep the filter gaps open, reduces clogging tendency and lowers wash-water demand compared with continuously washed belt-type systems.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ
What is a multi-disc screw press?
It is a sludge dewatering machine in which a slowly turning screw moves sludge through a filter body of fixed and moving rings. Water drains out through the gaps, and pressure builds towards the outlet to form a dewatered cake.
Does it need a sludge thickener?
No. The front section thickens the sludge, so low-concentration sludge can be fed directly.
Why does a screw press not clog?
The moving rings are pushed against the fixed rings as the screw turns, which keeps the filter gaps clean.
Is polymer needed?
Yes. Like other mechanical dewatering machines, the screw press needs the sludge to be conditioned with polymer. The dose depends on the sludge and is set during commissioning.
How does it compare with a belt press or filter press?
The multi-disc screw press is designed for low-speed, continuous operation with a compact enclosed layout and relatively low wash-water demand. Other dewatering technologies may produce different cake solids and have different power, labour and batch/continuous operating characteristics, so selection should be based on sludge properties and project requirements.
How is the right model selected?
From the sludge flow, dry solids load, feed concentration and sludge type.
