Rotary Drum Screen
Compact fine screen with a slowly rotating drum, continuous spray or brush cleaning and apertures from 1 mm to 6 mm.
Fine screening in a compact footprint
Adroit’s Rotary Drum Screen removes suspended solids, floating matter, hair and fibres from wastewater using a slowly rotating screening drum. It gives very fine screening, down to 1 mm, in a small space, which is why it is widely used in industrial effluent treatment plants and compact STPs where a long inclined screen will not fit.
We manufacture the drum in SS 304, SS 316 or Duplex steel, with perforated plate or wedge-wire screening surfaces, and size each unit for the flow, solids load and available channel or tank.

When a drum screen is the right choice
Application
A drum screen is chosen when the plant needs fine screening, the solids are fibrous or hairy, or the space is limited. Typical examples are textile, food and paper effluents, where fibres pass through bar screens and cause trouble in the ETP, and sewage plants where the process needs finer screening than 3 mm.
The drum can be mounted in an existing channel or supplied in its own tank, so it also suits retrofits.
How the rotary drum screen works
Operation
Wastewater enters the inside of the drum and passes out through the perforated or wedge-wire screen surface. Solids larger than the aperture are held on the inner surface of the drum, and the screened water flows on to treatment. The drum turns slowly, carrying the retained solids up and away from the incoming flow. Spray nozzles or brushes clean the screen as it rotates, so the open area is restored on every turn. The collected screenings are lifted out, usually by an integrated screw, and discharged into a bin or conveyor for disposal.
The low rotating speed keeps power consumption, noise and wear down.
Where drum screens are used
Application areas
Municipal sewage treatment plants
Fine screening of sewage ahead of biological treatment, especially in compact plants.
Industrial effluent treatment plants
Removes process solids and fibres before ETP units.
Food and beverage industries
Screens peels, pulp, grain and organic solids from process wastewater.
Pulp and paper mills
Captures fibres from white water and effluent.
Textile and chemical industries
Removes lint, fibres and suspended matter from effluent.
Power plants
Fine screening of cooling water.
Why choose Adroit's drum screen
Features & advantages
High capture, low head loss
Fine apertures and a large screening surface give high solids removal with minimal loss of head.
Self-cleaning
Spray nozzles or brushes clean the drum continuously while it rotates.
Material to suit the effluent
SS 304 for sewage, SS 316 or Duplex for aggressive industrial effluents.
Low energy and low noise
Slow rotation reduces power, wear and noise.
Built to your site
Drum diameter, length, aperture and mounting are selected for each project.
Reputed drives
Chain or direct drive with Nord or Bonfiglioli geared motors.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ
What does a rotary drum screen remove?
Suspended solids, floating matter, fibres, hair and other fine debris from wastewater and process water.
Perforated plate or wedge wire: which should I choose?
Perforated plate uses round openings, while wedge wire uses slots. Selection depends on the required aperture, solids characteristics, hydraulic loading, cleaning arrangement and the process requirement. Adroit selects the screening surface to suit the application.
How does a drum screen compare with a step screen?
Both are fine-screening technologies, but they use different mechanisms. A rotary drum screen can be supplied with apertures down to about 1 mm and can suit compact installations. A step screen uses fixed and moving lamellae, typically at 3–6 mm spacing. Selection depends on flow, solids characteristics, channel geometry, footprint and the required screening level.
How is the drum cleaned?
Spray nozzles or brushes clean the screen surface continuously as the drum turns, so the screen does not need to stop for cleaning.
Can it be installed in an existing channel?
Yes. The drum screen can be channel-mounted or supplied in its own tank to suit the site.
